CBSE class X exams to be optional from 2010-11

The central government on Monday announced that class X examinations of the Central Board for Secondary Education will be made optional from 2010-11.

Interacting with media persons, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal [ Images ] said grading system would be introduced in the present academic year.

Sibal added that students can take examinations on demand after the board is abolished.

The HRD minister had made an announcement in this regard earlier on August 31.
As per sources, the CBSE has prepared the format of an aptitude exam, which schools can use to test class X students on their level of understanding in each subject.

The emphasis, however, will be on continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) through the year instead of a single public exam at the end of class X.
